The Vijayanagar Empire has a prominent place in the
pre-independence period of the Indian sub-continent. Among the rulers of the
Vijayanagar Kindgom, Krishnadeva Raya was famous for transforming his regime
into a Golden Era for the history books. This was mainly because of a man named
Raman of Tenali in his court, who added feathers to the crown of the king
Krishnadeva Raya.
Tenali Raman, was known as Clown, Jester, Poet was a
minister in the court of Vijayanagar. He belonged to a town called Tenali and
that stuck as his surname.
